Cost Accountant

Description

Stratolaunch is a technology accelerator that engineers operationally realistic testing at Mach 5+. Our air-launched, Talon A testbeds are reusable, cost-effective platforms that enable routine access to the hypersonic environment. We deliver flight data critical to validating system performance and achieving rapid technology deployment. Together with our customers, we drive innovations that are imperative to advancing national security.

Reporting to the Controller, the Cost Accountant is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the costing and inventory system as well as supporting the month end close process.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Inventory

  • Participate in physical inventories – organizing, training, maintaining controls, counting, auditing, and reconciliations.
  • Ensuring proper costing and valuation of inventory.
  • Prepare and distribute cycle count accuracy reports.
  • Identify causes of inventory inaccuracies and take the appropriate steps to resolve.
  • Provide support to the organization by answering questions and providing direction.
  • Resolve inventory discrepancies – both quantity and value issues.

Costing

  • Develops systems and procedures for accumulation systems and/or cost accounting functions.
  • Determines fixed costs such as salaries, rent, and insurance.
  • Reviews and analyzes actual costs to identify inaccuracies.
  • Reviews, analyzes, and reports actual profit margins.
  • Researches production cost data to prepare analysis of the business and to assist in forecasting
  • Analyzes actual manufacturing costs and prepares periodic report comparing standard costs to actual production costs.
  • Records cost information for use in controlling expenditures.
  • Predicts, plans, and records variable costs such as purchases of raw material, labor, and operation costs.
  • Partnering with site leadership to ensure effective cost review is completed regularly to drive accountability and understanding while improving cost performance.
  • Providing reports and analysis of actual job costing that helps leadership drive improvements.
  • Predicts, plans, and records variable costs such as purchases of raw material, labor, and operation costs.
  • Provides management with reports specifying and comparing factors affecting prices and profitability of products or services.
  • Review costs that have errors, make the appropriate changes to all items involved, and reset, where necessary.
  • Conducting Ad hoc cost analysis as required.

Month End

  • Supports month-end close and reconciliation activities as assigned.
  • Reviewing, tracking, and following up on Capital Expenditure spending to help create cost justifications for new projects.
  • Tracking submissions and approvals and monitoring spending from start to completion and closure.
  • Review and correct cost performance and accounting record variances.
  • Identify inaccurate data in the ERP system, research the issues, and take the appropriate steps to correct.
  • Active participant in the implementation of the manufacturing module of the ERP.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with 5+ years of aerospace accounting experience
  • Ability to analyze cost data and provide insight to leadership on improvement opportunities.
  • Strong decision-making skills and the ability to use sound judgment and challenge assumptions when appropriate.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial and accounting concepts, techniques, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization to present idea in a comprehensive manner.
  • Possess a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality in handling and having access to sensitive information.
  • Strong understanding of both financial and operational processes and controls.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software as well as accounting software

Mojave Air & Spaceport is located 90 miles north of Greater Los Angeles. The majority of staff reside in Lancaster, Palmdale, and Tehachapi.

 

Mojave Air & Spaceport is located 95 miles north of Los Angeles. To outsiders it may seem like it is the middle-of-nowhere, but it offers both affordability and central access to a variety of California’s best attractions and landmarks. Hikers will find themselves within a 2-3 hours distance of some of the best state and national parks, including Yosemite and Sequoia in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Skiers will delight in being closely distanced to world-class resorts at Mammoth Mountain, Mountain High, and Big Bear. Beachgoers can find plenty of sand, sun, and sunsets at both Southern and Central California beaches like Ventura, Huntington, Santa Monica, and Pismo. The area also offers plenty of rural area for off-roading and horseback riding enthusiasts.

 

Not much for the outdoors and prefer the city life? You’re within a half day’s drive or less of Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, and San Francisco where you can find a variety of live entertainment, museums, tours, and historical sight-seeing. Theme parks are in abundance, with Six Flags Magic Mountain, Disneyland, and Knotts Berry Farm ready to meet the needs of rollercoaster thrill seekers.
